As I wrote about earlier, I recently got an Oculus Rift. Because the current version isn’t consumer-ready, it’s marketed as a developer prototype. As such, Oculus currently includes a 6 month free trial of the Unity game engine so developers can start creating content right away. I got my Oculus mainly to play with, but I am a developer at heart so I couldn’t resist coming up with an idea. I wanted a gradual introduction to Unity – something that wouldn’t require a lot of coding. I came up with the idea of recreating a popular television show’s set as if it were a real place. You could enter the show in virtual reality and experience what it would be like to visit a place that only exists in Hollywood studios and our imaginations. Because Seinfeld is one of my favorite shows, and an American classic I thought it would be fitting to recreate Jerry’s apartment in it’s entirety. It took about 2 months but with about a 3 week break in the middle. It was a a lot of work and A LOT of modeling. In the end, it was a very fun project and completely worth it. For more information, you can visit my official site for the project, www.jerrysplacevr.com. Below are a sequence of in-progress renders I saved after each days work.
